Everything you want to know about Alexa.com

What is Traffic Rank?

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach).

As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users).

The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago.

For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

What are sites and Web hosts?

Traffic is computed for sites, which are typically defined at the domain level.

For example, the Web hosts www.msn.com, carpoint.msn.com and slate.msn.com are all treated as part of the same site, because they all reside on the same domain, msn.com.

An exception is personal home pages, which are treated separately if they can be automatically identified as such from the URLs in question.

Also, sites which are found to be serving the “same” content are generally counted together as the same site.

What is Reach?

Reach measures the number of users. Reach is typically expressed as the percentage of all Internet users”+” who visit a given site.

So, for example, if a site like yahoo.com has a reach of 28%, this means that if you took random samples of one million Internet users, you would on average find that”+” 280,000 of them visit yahoo.com.

Alexa expresses reach as number”+” of users per million. Alexa’s one-week and three-month average”+” reach are measures of daily reach, averaged over the specified”+” time period.

The reach rank is a ranking of all sites based solely”+” on their reach.

The three-month changes are determined by comparing”+” a site’s current reach and reach rank with its values from three month ago.

What are Page Views?

Page views measure the number of”+” pages viewed by Alexa Toolbar users. Multiple page views of”+” the same page made by the same user on the same day are counted”+” only once.

The page views per user numbers are the average numbers”+” of unique pages viewed per user per day by the users visiting”+” the site. The page view rank is a ranking of all sites based solely on the total number of page views (not page views per user).

The three-month changes are determined by comparing a sites current”+” page view numbers with those from three month ago.

Page views per million indicates what fraction of all the page views by toolbar users go to a particular site.

For example, if yahoo.com has 70,000″+” page views per million, this means that 7% of all page views go to yahoo.com.

If you summed the fractional page views over all sites, you would get 100% (this is not true of reach, since each user can of course visit more than one site.

Want to get more pages of your website indexed by search engines ? Here are some useful tips:

Site structure
Make sure your subpages are easily accessible by search engine bots. Create a sitemap page that links to all pages of your website and place a link to it from the homepage. If you have a large website, break the sitemap up in several parts and keep the total link number under 100 per page. Link from your homepage to deep pages to get them and the sites around them crawled faster.

No session IDs
Get rid of session IDs. Bots rarely index pages with a session IDs because they think that those are different pages (because of the different IDs) with the same content.

No variables in the URLs
Avoid variables in the URL. They are indexed slowly and often getting no PageRank. Use Apache’s mod_rewrite feature to convert your dynamic pages to static. Redirect all old pages to the new ones with a 301 redirect. Note however that if you do that for your established website, search engines will need some time to crawl the new static pages.

Get links !
Inbound (incoming) links are half of the SEO battle nowadays. Your website needs links from quality, on topic websites. The higher your PageRank the faster and deeper your website will be crawled by bots. Get links not only to your home page, but also to the deep pages. Make sure the spiders can find your site from different places.

One proven method of getting back links to your web site when doing SEO is blog commenting (not blog spam) by the way…

The trouble was that its always been a pain in the you know what to track down these sorts of related blogs.

Well now, Google makes it super easy to find blogs that are related to your niche.

Watch this video and see how easy it really is to find blogs in your niche that you can post comments too when trying to build your back link profile.

Ok, I admit this video isn’t my best effort. It’s what we call in the business “down and dirty” – which means nothing fancy but the information more then makes up for the production values

If you are doing true SEO, then you are purposely targeting specific keywords and keyword phrases that you have tested and that you know convert.

The fact that no body wants to admit is this:

You can not effectively do SEO on more then 3-10 keywords or phrases at once.

If you are trying to, then you are really hurting your bottom line because it will take you forever to achieve the rankings you are looking for.

Having said that, sure you could have an entire team in the Philippines doing blog spam for you in order to try to get back links for dozens of keywords at once, but that’s just sloppy.

Honestly, the formula for SEO success is to focus on 3-5 keywords CONVERTING keywords or phrases ONLY at a time.

Once you achieve your desired rank (that should be #1 of course) then and only then should you start to focus on other keywords.

I am continually amazed when I see people trying to do SEO on dozens of keywords/phrases at once. This sort of SEO strategy will cause you to lose in the market place – every single time.

Because your competitors who understand the value of focus and targeting will start to capture the top spots for each of your chosen keywords/phrases one by one.

At the end of six months, you’ll be sitting there scratching your head wondering what happened, and where all your traffic went!

And the worse part is that you’ll have a devil of a time at that point playing catch up, and most likely you won’t ever catch up and here’s why.

Let’s say you spent the next 90 days trying to rank for 100 keyword or keyword phrases and you managed during this time to get 1000 new back links.

Not bad right? That’s 1,000 new links to your site! Wow! That’s sure to pump up your back link profile and give you some ranking juice, right!?

Well, not so fast. Yes, you did get 1,000 new back links, and that will help your domain gain some new authority overall, but because your efforts were divided between 100 different KWPs, you only managed to get 10 new anchor text back links per keyword phrase.

Think 10 back links per keyword phrase is enough to move your chosen page up in the serps for that keyword phrase?

Let’s be honest. If you are targeting a CONVERTING keyword phrase, then chances are that there is going to be a lot of competition, and 10 new links per keyword phrase isn’t really going to move you.

But what about your competitor who has the same list of 100 keywords that you do, but instead of trying to optimize for them all at once, they focus on just 3 of the keywords / phrases during the same 90 days.

Using the same effort, they also managed to get 1000 new back links – but since they focused on just 3 keyword phrases instead of all 100, they were able to add 333 links per keyword, where you were only able to add 10 links per keyword.

Do you think that 333 new links is going to move your ranking? You bet!

Search Engine Guru Dan Thies calls this “Having your lunch eaten” because, they moved up in rankings a lot, and you didn’t move at all. In fact, they stole your ranking out from under you and you didn’t even see it coming.

At the end of 90 days, you are still working on getting back links the same 100 keywords, while your competitor has moved on to the NEXT set of 3-5 keywords on the list.

Let’s look at what happens:

Now for the sake of argument lets assume that the rate of link acquisition remains constant.

Day 180:

You now have 20 back links for each of the keyword phrases on your list of 100.

Your competitor now has 333 back links for EACH 6 of the keyword phrases on the list of 100.

At the end of a year:

You now have a whopping 40 back links for each of the keyword phrases on your list of 100.

On the other hand, your competitor now has 333 back links EACH for 12 of the keyword phrases on the list of 100.

But let’s scale that out and you pump more of your profits into seo and hiring link-getters. And let’s say you went big and DOUBLED your work force and got double the results.

At the end of a year:

You now have a whopping 80 back links for each of the keyword phrases on your list of 100.

Don’t get me wrong, 80 back links per keyword is great! But it took you a year to do it, and during that year you had new competition come into the market.

On the other hand, your competitor now has over 660 back links a piece, for 24 of the keyword phrases on the list of 100.

And I can guarantee that they are making more money then you – hand over fist because they are CRUSHING you in the search engine results.

Seriously, think of it this way. At the end of the year -

You have 80 back links per keyword phrase / url

They have 660+ per keyword phrase / url!

How will you ever catch up? You won’t.

Be smart, find which of your keywords converts the best and then FOCUS your SEO efforts on 3-5 keyword at a time.

Then and only then move to the next set of 3-5.

Doing your SEO this way ensures consistent results, dominance over your competitors and a sure and steady income.

Facebook dropped a bomb the other day announcing it’s new “social plug-ins” and is targeting the 800lb. arrogant gorilla Google, for advertising dollars 0 and it looks like they are winning.

Watch this video and you’ll see what I mean…

So what does this mean for professional SEO’s and web masters you, ridiculously inexpensive and VERY targeted traffic to Facebooks 200 million+ users.

Here are some facts that you may need to consider when talking to your clients about using Facebook ads:

1. Facebook has way more traffic. It get’s over 39 BILLION page views a month!

2. You can TARGET your ads so that only QUALIFIED people see your ads. Good luck doing that with Adwords – you can’t

3. Facebook is simple to use and fast, you’ll be getting killer traffic in just a few hours AND there’s no “Google slap” because Facebook actually respects it’s advertisers.

4. Facebook ads are 1/4 – HALF the cost of Google Adwords

5. Facebook ads convert considerably higher that Googles do AND at usually HALF the price or less!

Again I can’t stress this enough – if you’re doing PPC advertising for your own website or that of a client, you can now get highly converting, targeted traffic for pennies.

This video link below tells the full story and in just a few minutes you’ll see the ramifications of this fundamental shift in power in the advertising and PPC world.

Most of the time the problem is simply a matter of how you’re looking up your stats versus how Master Site Manager looks them up.

For example we look up your site in the format:

Remember, you want to compare apples to apples here, so it’s very important to put both the “http://” AND the “www” in your domain so that you are looking up your site the same way we do.

If you play around with it and do your searches in Yahoo for example, you’ll see the effects using the “http” and the “www” when searching vs., not using them. The differences are really quite dramatic.

We’ve done a lot of testing and found this format to be the most accurate.

But What If Your SEO Results Still Don’t Match Ours?

There are few other things that could be contributing to this.

Sometimes the results you’ll see are different based on geography and from what data center your ISP is getting its results from especially if you’re located outside of the United States (all of our look up servers are currently located in the U.S.)

Other times it might be that we looked up the results a few days ago and they’ve changed.

An easy thing to do is just press the “Update Stats” button in your control panel. Then see if this doesn’t fix the problem. 9 times out of 10 it will.

If your results are still not matching up, use the support contact form and let us know about it.

It’s something we can take a look and get fixed for you.

1) Simply go to the SEO STATS tab

2) Next look for the URL that you want to add keywords to, and then click the link labeled VIEW in the keywords column for that domain.

3) Lastly, simply click the ADD KEYWORDS button at the top of the page.

You’ll see a pop-up window where you will enter your new keyword or list of keywords.

Enter your new keywords one per line.

Now if adding more than a dozen keywords at a time you’ll often find it faster to create a standard text file with each keyword on its own line.

Then simply copy that text from the text document and paste it into the and add keywords window.

The system will tell you how many additional keywords you can add based on the total allocation of keywords for the account package you’ve selected.

Once you add Press “Add button” the system will start to query your rankings for these new keywords. This may take a few seconds to a few minutes depending upon the number of keywords you’ve added.

Now let’s say that you’re a power user and you’ve got more than just a few websites you’d like to monitor.

But the idea of having to type in the details for each site individually seems sort of overwhelming doesn’t?

No need to worry because you can easily import all of the relevant information for all of your websites at once.

To import a list of sites simply log into your account and click on the ADVANCED tab in the blue horizontal navigation bar at the top of the page.

Then under the heading “IMPORT WEBSITES” you’ll see a link to click for instructions and a .CSV template that contains the proper formatting for our system. when you click this link you’ll be taken to a new page. it’s on this page where you’ll actually do the importation of your websites.

1.	To get started, simply download the Microsoft excel (.csv) template.

(Or you can download the template here)

2.	Now add your sites, including log in URLs, web hosts, etc to the specified columns in the .csv template.

Note: If you are ready how this information in a.CSV template, simply rearrange the columns in that spreadsheet to match those of our template. though honestly you’re better off transferring all of your data to our template to make sure that everything works as it should.

3.	Once you’ve added all your site information, save the file and then use the “browse” and “Upload Websites” buttons below to add your sites to your account.

Once your information has been uploaded, we will start looking up your SEO stats and you will receive an email from the system once your tracking stats are ready.

Note: Be sure to white list “@mastersitemanager.com” in your e-mail program so your confirmation email doesn’t accidentally get stuck in your spam folder.

Please note: Your web site stats will not appear in the SEO Stats tab until you receive notification e-mail you.
